In this eye-opening conversation, Britt sits down with California cowgirl, Alli Fender to discuss the challenges faced by California ranchers, including regulatory pressures, those doomsday warnings of methane emissions, water restrictions, and economic impacts... and how this all impacts you and the meat on your table.
They explore sustainable ranching practices, consumer concerns about beef safety (is our beef injected with the new technology?), and the threat of screw worms.
The discussion emphasizes the importance of supporting local ranchers and understanding the rich heritage of ranching in California.
More about Alli and Flying F Ranch:
Allison (Alli) Fender grew up in the gorgeous San Diego backcountry on a small Dairy and Beef operation.
She attended San Diego Mesa College and played soccer on the women’s team while attending the Animal Health program offered there. In 2014, she obtained her Associate of Science Degree in Animal Health Technology and became licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician. She worked in several small animal hospitals in the area.
A month after graduation in 2014, she and her high school sweetheart were married on Mesa Chiquita Ranch, where she grew up. Her dad gifted her and her husband, Bryce, ten bred heifers, which was the start of their beef herd.
Flying F Ranch was established in 2020 after Bryce and Alli created the brand and business selling beef directly to San Diego consumers. Their motto is “We Give a Flying F About BEEF.”
In 2021, they added Registered Black Angus cattle into their herd to improve carcass quality. The couple learned more about genetics and began breeding more mindfully, propelling their beef business to a higher level.
The couple currently sells Black Angus Beef direct to consumer as whole/half shares and USDA retail at local farmer’s markets. They recently started offering ranch to table experiences for San Diego locals to come enjoy a 5 course beef inspired meal curated by a local chef. They bring in local wineries and breweries to pair with the menu. The dinners are on open pastures on the ranch with cattle grazing nearby.
Bryce and Alli raise their three children on the ranch together. They believe raising the next generation beside them will teach them valuable life lessons and memories.
